Dessert is actually a French concept. It was the French people who, in the early 1600s, divided sweet portions of the meal from the sour & savory parts. Until then, European and American cooking had followed the same Roman tradition of making no such distinction.

The term “dessert” is widely used in regions like America, Australia, Canada, Ireland & France. In England, some people consider the term “dessert” to be vulgar, and call this word as “afters”, the “sweet” or “pudding” instead.

The upper-class majority preferred using the term “pudding.” But these people will still call a dessert spoon a dessert spoon. In the food business in England, though, dessert has surely become the term used by food marketers. To sum it all up desserts are sweet dishes served in fairly small portions after a main course meal.
